Cabinet doors that look tired around the handles and above the range are rarely worn out. They have usually been cleaned with something that removes finish a little at a time, and by the time the difference is visible the damage is in the coating rather than on it.
What actually damages a cabinet finish
Anything with ammonia, bleach or a strong solvent in it. Common glass cleaners and multi-surface sprays contain ammonia, and used regularly on a painted or conversion-varnish cabinet they soften and gradually remove the top of the finish.
Then abrasives. Magic-eraser style melamine pads are extremely fine abrasives, not sponges, and on a satin cabinet finish they polish through it. So do scouring powders and the rough side of a kitchen sponge. The result is a shiny patch on a satin door, which cannot be cleaned back.
The routine that works
Warm water with a small amount of dish soap on a soft cloth, wrung out rather than wet, followed by a dry cloth. That handles the great majority of kitchen soil, and its main virtue is that it does nothing to the finish over thousands of repetitions.
The important part is the second cloth. Water left standing on a cabinet, particularly on the bottom edge of a door above a dishwasher, is what eventually gets into the joint and swells the substrate. Drying immediately is the habit that matters most in a humid climate.
- Mild dish soap and water, then dry immediately
- No ammonia, bleach or solvent-based cleaners
- No melamine pads or abrasive sponges
- Never let water stand along the bottom edge of a door
- Wipe grease promptly rather than letting it polymerise
Grease that has been there a while
Cooking grease that has sat on a cabinet above a range oxidises into a hard, sticky film that soap alone will not shift. The temptation at that point is a degreaser, which is exactly the class of product that damages the finish.
A paste of baking soda and a little water applied gently with a soft cloth, or a diluted solution of a cabinet-safe cleaner left to dwell for a minute before wiping, generally releases it without abrasion. Dwell time is the substitute for scrubbing, and it is the technique that saves finishes.
Middle Tennessee humidity and the parts that fail first
The bottom rail of a door above a dishwasher, and the cabinet interior next to it, take the most abuse in any kitchen. Steam released when a dishwasher is opened mid-cycle or immediately at the end goes straight up into that joint. Letting the cycle finish before opening is a small habit that saves doors.
Under-sink cabinets are the other one. Humidity plus the occasional slow supply leak swells a particleboard base long before anyone notices water. A cheap water leak alarm under the sink and a plastic mat under the cleaning supplies handles most of it.
