Semi-Custom & Stock Cabinets, in practice
Semi-custom is the right answer for most kitchens where the layout already works. It costs meaningfully less than full custom, the box construction is often excellent, and the size flexibility covers almost everything a normal room asks for.
The failure mode is fillers. A run specified without allowing for out-of-square walls ends up with wide filler strips that make it look bought rather than built, and careful measuring at the design stage is what avoids it.

FAQ
Semi-Custom & Stock Cabinets — questions
Are stock cabinets good enough?
For a rental, a laundry or a budget kitchen, a quality stock line is fine — plywood boxes, solid wood doors and soft-close hardware exist at that level. What matters is that they are specified and installed properly: leveled, shimmed, scribed to the wall and fixed into studs. A well-installed stock kitchen outlasts a badly installed custom one.
What should I look for in a manufactured cabinet?
Plywood rather than particleboard boxes, dovetailed solid-wood drawer boxes, full-extension soft-close slides, and a finish with a real warranty. Doors are style; boxes and hardware are what you live with. The showroom sample is the door; ask to see the box.
